Local Singles, a new musical, with the book, music & lyrics by Nick Navari, was awarded a grant for a full production through the National Endowment for the Arts as a part of Season 8 of the New Hazlett Theater’s Community Supported Artist Performance Series. The show was pro-shot as a feature film as a part of Navari’s residency at the theater, and the Original Cast Recording is available now across all streaming platforms.
For a good time, call "Local Singles", the last surviving support group for lonely people. The YMCA's premiere club for bachelors and bachelorettes includes one looking for love, one looking to move on from a crush, and one dealing with a breakup and a pregnancy. Through high comedy, deep tragedy, and THREE twists, the Local Singles may not find what they initially seek, but they certainly walk away with something new- a family. Development History
June 2020: Local Singles, a new musical, was awarded a grant for a full production through the National Endowment for the Arts
July 2020: Nick Navari was named Pittsburgh's Community Supported Artist. The 750-seat New Hazlett Theater awarded me a residency and chose Local Singles to kick off their new season
October 2020: When the pandemic showed no signs of slowing down, the NEA doubled down on the show, and gave us the funds to shoot it as a feature film
January 2021: The original cast recording was recorded with musicians from the Pittsburgh Opera and 2 songs debuted on NPR
March 2021: Local Singles made its national debut as a feature film to great reviews:
November 2021: Local Singles was ranked in the 2021 Best of Pittsburgh list for the arts by CityPaper
December 2021: The show was nominated for 16 Broadway World Awards and won five, including Best Director and Best Supporting Actor
February 2022: Just 11 months after its debut, Local Singles returned to the stage for its second full production at the 350 seat Lamp Theatre in Irwin, PA
July 2022: Nick Navari was named Producing Artistic Director at The Strand Theater off of the success of the show
April 2023: The score of Local Singles was presented in the Charlotte Shout Festival in the US debut of the Pianodrome, an amphitheater made entirely of old upright pianos
August 2023: Local Singles made its Denver debut in the Colorado New Musical Festival
January 2024: Queen City Concerts will present Local Singles in its third season in Charlotte, NC
January 2025: Local Singles will open Off-Broadway at the Players Theatre for a 5 week run
